Tamil Medical Literature for Siddha Pharmaceutical Technologies in the Indian Knowledge System

Our Indian tradition possesses a deep-rooted history in fields such as astronomy, architecture, ecology, agriculture, and medicine. Within this tradition, Tamil heritage holds a primary position by virtue of its antiquity and literary richness. Tamil literature explains not only lifestyle based on land classification (Thinai) but also science. Just as traditional medicine holds immense importance in the Indian Knowledge System, the Tamil knowledge tradition remains incomplete without Tamil Siddha medicine. Various types of Siddha formulations form the core foundation of Siddha medicine, which was created by the Tamil language and Tamil Siddhas, and preserved by Tamils. The objective of this paper is to analyze and explain the Tamil literature that details the technologies behind the sixty-four categories of Siddha medicines. This paper explores various Tamil medical texts of the Siddhas and the information embedded within them regarding drug potency, ingredients that reduce potency, ingredients that enhance potency, and pharmaceutical preparation rules.
