Abstract

Education is the fundamental tool for the holistic progress of human life. It is considered not merely a means of acquiring knowledge, but a way of life that enables individuals to live with ethics, character, and social responsibility. Such educational thoughts hold an ancient place in the cultural tradition of Tamils (Varadarajan; Velupillai). In particular, the Pathinenkilkkanakku (Eighteen Lesser Texts) ethical literature produced during the Post-Sangam period clearly highlights the nobility of education and its practical purpose in life (Elangumaran; Vaiyapuri Pillai). Ethical works such as Thirukkural, Naladiyar, Iniyavai Narpathu, Inna Narpathu, Acharakovai, Palamoli Nanuru, Sirupanchamoolam, and Elathi do not treat education solely as intellectual growth; rather, they view it as a noble instrument to cultivate human morality, social responsibility, good governance, humility, rationality, and ethics for living. This paper examines the educational thoughts found in ethical literature, explaining their developmental background, the various objectives of education, and their role in individual and social progress. Furthermore, it compares these principles with modern educational policies (Government of India) and highlights the timeless relevance of the educational concepts emphasized in ethical texts. The study reinforces that value-based education, which shapes a human being into a complete personality, forms the foundation for sustainable social progress. This paper will be useful for researchers, teachers, and students interested in understanding the educational traditions of Tamil society.
