Mallakhamb Sport in Sangam Literature
Abstract
Each of the traditional martial sports of Tamil society possesses its own unique individuality. The heritage sports of the Tamils were not created merely for entertainment; they were designed to simultaneously provide joy to the mind and strength to the body. These traditional sports also speak to the pride of our land. It is through Sangam literature that we are able to understand the nature of the traditional sports of that era today. The roots of all martial arts practiced around the world today can be traced back to the heritage sports of the Tamils, such as Malladal (wrestling, Mallakhamb), Silambam, combat wrestling (Marpor), Adimurai, and Kalaripayattu. The primary objective of this research study is to highlight these traditional sports, which are currently facing extinction, so that today's society living in the modern world may come to know and understand them.
