Feminist Awareness Thoughts in Imayam's Novels

Abstract

This article explores the feminist awareness thoughts found in the novels of Imayam, a significant creator in modern Tamil literature. The article points out how traditional grammars such as 'shyness' (naanam) and 'chastity' (karpu), as defined by Sangam literature and Tolkappiyam, have been patriarchal oppressions imposed upon women. The women appearing in Imayam’s novels are neither philosophers nor great beauties; rather, they are ordinary women struggling for their daily livelihood.

Through female characters in novels such as Arokkiyamary in Koveru Kazhudaigal, and others in Arumugam and Sedal, this article explains how Imayam has consciously recorded the sexual exploitation, labor exploitation, and social neglect faced by women in both rural and urban environments. Imayam's female characters—who keep flowing like water without faltering in any difficult situation and without thoughts of suicide—provide the courage and awareness necessary for modern society.
