Abstract

This research paper examines the profound contributions of French scholar Jean-Luc Chevillard to Classical Tamil studies, focusing on his extensive work in Tamil grammar, historical linguistics, and classical literature. Chevillard's academic trajectory shifted toward classical Tamil grammar through his detailed investigation of the Collatikāram of Tolkāppiyam and Cēnāvaraiyar's commentary. Utilizing modern Western linguistic theories, historical linguistics, and comparative approaches, Chevillard analyzed core grammatical features including deixis, ideophones, ticai-c-col, Eluttatikāram, and Tamil metrics (Ceyyuḷiyal). His interdisciplinary methodology bridged traditional Indian commentary traditions with international linguistic frameworks, opening new analytical vistas for Tamilology. This study highlights Chevillard's critical role in advancing Classical Tamil research on global academic platforms, leading to his recognition with the Kalaignar Karunanidhi Semmozhi Tamil Award.
