Abstract

Sangam literature serves as a rich repository of information that helps us understand the lifestyle of the ancient Tamils. The ancient Tamil people established systematic ways of life based on the different geographical landscapes and organized their lives according to the three categories of Muthalporul (primary elements), Karupporul (thematic or associated elements), and Uripporul (human emotions and activities). Within this society, people exchanged information through various means.

When human beings, who directly convey information, are excluded from consideration, Sangam poems reveal that musical instruments, natural phenomena, and non-human living beings were recognized and used as mediums of communication. The objective of this article is to explore and analyse these mediums of communication as represented in Sangam literature.
