Vallinamai, Tamil Language, Tamil LettersAbstract
In Tamil, each letter has a primary, inherent sound. However, variations in pronunciation occur depending on context, particularly influenced by "vallinamai" (strength/hardness) – the characteristic of hard or strong consonants. During juncture in words, these strong consonants sometimes soften. Consider words like arangam, pancham, venchinam, and thangam; the "vallinamai" of certain consonants appears diminished. While this softening is a recognized grammatical feature, what is truly remarkable is the consonant "த" (tha). Uniquely, it produces three different "rakara osaigal" (rakara sounds). This phenomenon warrants closer examination.
