Abstract

Epics are traditionally composed centering on the four fundamental goals of life: Virtue (Aram), Wealth (Porul), Pleasure (Inbam), and Salvation (Veedu). Silappathikaram, considered the foremost among the Five Great Epics, is generally identified as a 'Tragic Drama' or a 'Tragic Epic'. However, the objective of this research paper is to explore how 'Nakai' (Laughter/Humor)—the first among the eight types of sentiments (Meippadu) defined by Tholkappiyar—is manifested in this epic. This paper explains in detail the subtle contributions of the four causal factors of Nakai—namely Mockery (Ellal), Naivety/Youthfulness (Ilamai), Ignorance (Pethamai), and Credulity (Madan)—within the dramatic context and characterization of Silappathikaram. Finally, this study establishes that these elements of humor not only assist in the epic's reflection of holistic human life but specifically serve to uphold the supremacy of Kannagi's blemishless love and the virtue of her chastity (Pattini).
