In the Akattinai tradition (love poetry), a sub-division of the unique Tamil literary grammar of Porul Ilakkanam (subject matter), the physical emaciation caused by the heroine's separation (from her lover) is often mistaken by her foster mothers as Veri Noi (frenzied illness) caused by the possession of Lord Muruga. It is customary for the Velan (a shaman/priest of Muruga) to perform a ritual known as Veriyadal (frenzied dance). Verivilakkal (Banning the Frenzied Dance) is the act where the heroine's female friend intervenes to stop this ritual, revealing the truth of the heroine's real love (Kalavu/secret love) to protect her chastity (Karp/fidelity).
This research paper examines how the Vaishnava Bhakti literature, specifically Nammazhwar (Parankusa Nayaki) and Pillai Perumal Iyengar (Manavala Nayaki), adapted this classical tradition to establish 'transcendental' Bhakti. Nammazhwar condemned Veriyadal as the 'inferiority of minor deity worship' and established Narayana as the 'Supreme Deity' (Perundheivam). As a cure, he prescribed Vaishnava symbols such as the dust from the feet of devotees and the Tulasi garland. Manavala Nayaki rejected animal sacrifice, proposing the chanting of the Lord's holy names (Thirunama Uraithal) and bathing in the Silambaaru River of Maliruncholai as the solution.
This study establishes that through their Verivilakkal, the secular love (Kalavozhukkam) was transformed into 'Prema' Bhakti (devotional love) for the Paramatma (Supreme Soul), thereby establishing Vaishnava monopolistic devotion.
