Abstract

This study explores how the Navarasas (nine aesthetic emotions) are expressed across the three divisions of the Thirukkural—Aram (Virtue), Porul (Wealth), and Inbam (Love). Grounded in the theoretical framework of the Navarasa concept as articulated in Bharata Muni’s Natyashastra, the research analyzes the emotional structure, linguistic conciseness, psychological dimensions, and aesthetic composition of the couplets. It proposes that Shanta (tranquility) and Karuna (compassion) are predominantly expressed in the Araththuppaal, Veera (heroism) and Raudra (anger) in the Porutpaal, and Shringara (love) in the Kamaththuppaal. The central objective of this study is to demonstrate that the emotional evolution across these three sections forms an integrated aesthetic framework.
