Time Computation and Auspicious Event Management: An Analysis of Muhurtha Determination Rules in Indian Astrological Tradition

Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive scientific and socio-cultural analysis of 'Muhurtha Astrology' (Electional Astrology), one of the primary branches of traditional Indian astrology. The study describes the contributions of the five pillars of the almanac (Panchangam)—namely Tithi (lunar day), Vaaram (weekday), Nakshatram (asterism/star), Yogam, and Karanam—which form the backdrop for selecting the most auspicious time for significant life milestones such as marriages, housewarmings (Grihapravesam), and the initiation of new businesses.

Furthermore, using sample horoscopic charts, Dasa-Bhukti (planetary periods), and the positioning of Maandhi, this research highlights the mathematical-astrological rules required to precisely calculate auspicious Muhurthas. The final section offers a comparative analysis of the psychological benefits, scientific perspectives, and spiritual viewpoints associated with these Muhurtha calculations.
