ஆய்வாளர் வழிகாட்டிGuide for researchers

எழுத்துப் பிரதி வழிகாட்டி: தமிழாய்வுக் கட்டுரை எழுதும் முறைManuscript guide: writing a Tamil studies paper

The formatting rules are in the Author Guidelines. This page covers the step before that – from choosing a research question to citing sources and writing the abstract – and explains what our reviewers look for.

1. தெளிவான ஆய்வுக் கேள்வி1. A clear research question

A focused question – for example, the king–poet relationship in the Puṟanāṉūṟu poems on giving – makes a better paper than a broad topic such as “ethics in Sangam literature”. State in the introduction what the study sets out to find, why it matters, and who has written on it before.

2. முதன்மை மூலங்களும் பதிப்புகளும்2. Primary sources and editions

Cite classical works by title and verse or sūtra number (for example Kuṟaḷ 391; Puṟanāṉūṟu 192). Give the edition you used – editor, publisher, year – in the references, and name the commentator when you follow a commentary (urai). If you rely on an online text such as Project Madurai, check it against a printed edition.

3. வாதத்தின் அமைப்பு3. Structuring the argument

Use an introduction, analysis under numbered headings, and a conclusion. Each section should establish one point: after quoting a verse, explain and analyse it in your own words – a sequence of quotations is not analysis. In the conclusion, say briefly what the study has found.

4. ஆய்வுச் சுருக்கமும் திறவுச் சொற்களும்4. Abstract and keywords

Write a 150–250-word abstract in Tamil and English covering the aim, sources or method, main findings and conclusion, and give 4–6 keywords in both languages. The English abstract is what makes your paper findable in international databases, so check any machine translation rather than pasting it as it is.

5. மேற்கோள்களும் துணைநூல்களும்5. Citations and references

Follow MLA 9th edition (or another established style used consistently throughout). Example: Vaiyapuri Pillai, S. Tamiḻc Cuṭar Maṇikaḷ. Pari Nilaiyam, 1952. Paraphrased ideas need a citation just as quotations do.

6. கட்டுரைகள் திருப்பி அனுப்பப்படுவதற்கான பொதுவான காரணங்கள்6. Common reasons papers are returned

  • A similarity index above the 15% guide limit (see the Plagiarism policy).
  • No edition or verse number given for quotations.
  • Missing English title, abstract or keywords.
  • More than 8,000 words including references.
  • Author names left in the main file (they must be removed for double-blind review).
  • Undisclosed use of AI tools – see Authorship, contributorship and AI.

7. ஆசிரியர் பட்டியல் உங்கள் உழைப்பைக் காட்ட வேண்டும்7. The author list must reflect real work

Only people who genuinely contributed to the research and writing may be listed as authors. Buying a “position” on a paper that has already been written, or adding a name for payment, is authorship misconduct: such papers are not accepted, and are retracted if discovered after publication. See the authorship policy.
