In the history of Tamil short stories, Tamilavan's works hold a prominent place for shifting the emphasis from traditional author-centric storytelling to the reader's interpretive experience through postmodern narrative strategies. Grounded in Roland Barthes' concept of the "Death of the Author" and Michel Foucault's ideas on authorial power, the primary objective of this research paper is to examine how Tamilavan's stories deconstruct the singular authority of the writer over the text. Based on Tamilavan's five major short story collections, this paper analyzes how he avoids confining stories to fixed conclusions, structuring them instead as 'open texts' that allow readers to derive meaning across multiple levels according to their own perspectives. In addition, this study situates Tamilavan's narrative strategies within a broader comparative frame by drawing on Western reader-response theorists such as Wolfgang Iser, Stanley Fish, and Louise Rosenblatt, thereby extending the theoretical scope of the original enquiry. Ultimately, these works possess a unique approach that freely grants the authority of textual interpretation to the reader, transforming them into the central focus of the reading process.
