Tamil Resources (தமிழ் வளங்கள்)Tamilmanam International Research Journal of Tamil Studies – Tamil peer reviewed journal cover

Oct 7, 2026 · @Veerakannan Es

A Tamil peer reviewed journal is where Tamil scholarship earns its credibility: independent experts read, test and improve each paper before it reaches readers. If you are a research scholar, teacher or independent researcher working on Tamil language, literature, culture or history, the journal you choose decides how your work is reviewed, found and counted.

This guide explains how peer review works, how to check whether a Tamil journal is genuine now that the UGC-CARE list has ended, and how to prepare and submit your paper to Tamilmanam International Research Journal of Tamil Studies (தமிழ்மணம் சர்வதேச தமிழ் ஆய்விதழ்). Tamilmanam uses double-blind peer review, gives every article a Crossref DOI, publishes open access in Tamil and English, and charges nothing to submit.

What is a Tamil peer reviewed journal?

A Tamil peer reviewed journal is a scholarly periodical that publishes research on Tamil language, literature, culture and history only after independent experts have evaluated each manuscript for originality, method, sources and argument, and the editor has accepted it on the strength of their reports.

Peer review (also called refereeing) is what separates a research journal from a magazine, a blog or a conference souvenir. There are three common models:

  • Single-blind: reviewers know who the author is, but the author does not know the reviewers.
  • Double-blind: neither side knows the other. This is the model Tamilmanam uses, because it keeps the focus on the paper rather than the author’s name or institution.
  • Open review: identities are shared, and sometimes the reports are published.

Where you publish matters beyond prestige. Universities and colleges look at peer-reviewed publications for PhD progress, faculty recruitment and career advancement, so a journal with a transparent review process protects the value of your work.

How peer review works at Tamilmanam

Every research article at Tamilmanam passes through five stages, and the journal reports a typical first decision in about one week.

  1. Editorial screening. The editorial office checks that the paper fits the scope, follows the format and passes a similarity check. Papers outside the scope, or with overlap above 15% (excluding references and properly quoted material), go back to the author.
  2. Double-blind review. The handling editor removes author details and sends the manuscript to at least two reviewers who know the subject. Reviewers do not see who wrote the paper, and authors do not see who reviewed it.
  3. On the strength of the reports, the editor accepts the paper, asks for minor or major revision, or rejects it. Reviewer comments reach the author anonymously.
  4. The author revises and resubmits. The revised paper may return to the same reviewers.
  5. Accepted papers are copy-edited, typeset and published online with their received, accepted and published dates and a DOI.

What reviewers look for

  • Originality and a real contribution to Tamil Studies
  • Sound method, reliable sources and a clear argument
  • Engagement with earlier scholarship on the topic
  • Clear language and logical structure
  • Accurate citations and references

Reviewers and editors must declare any conflict of interest and step aside when they cannot judge a paper fairly. Papers written by editors or board members are handled by a different editor, and the author cannot see the review. Read the full Peer Review Process and Plagiarism Policy.

How to choose a Tamil peer reviewed journal after UGC-CARE

No central list now tells you which Tamil journal is acceptable, so you have to check each journal yourself. In its public notice of February 2025, the UGC discontinued the UGC-CARE journal list and replaced it with suggestive parameters that each institution uses to judge journals. Check your own university’s rules, then test the journal against this list.

What to check What a genuine journal shows Where to find it at Tamilmanam
Scope Clear aims and subject areas that match your paper Aims & Scope
Peer review Review type, number of reviewers and the stages a paper goes through Peer Review Process
Editorial board Named editors with institutions and working contact details Editorial Board
ISSN A valid ISSN you can verify on the ISSN Portal 3049-0723 (Online), 3107-7781 (Print)
Ethics and plagiarism A written ethics statement and a stated similarity limit Publication Ethics, Plagiarism Policy
Fees Every charge published before you submit, nothing payable before review Author Charges
DOI and archiving Persistent DOIs and a written preservation policy Indexing, Archiving Policy
Licence and copyright A Creative Commons licence and clear copyright terms Copyright & Licensing

Warning signs of a predatory journal

  • Acceptance promised before review, or publication within a day or two of payment
  • Fees demanded at submission, before any review
  • Claims of UGC-CARE approval for a journal that started after the list closed, or “impact factors” from agencies nobody recognises
  • No named editors, or editors whose institutions cannot be verified
  • Articles without DOIs, or DOIs that do not resolve

How to submit a research paper to Tamilmanam

You can submit at any time; accepted papers appear in the next available monthly issue.

  1. Confirm the paper is eligible. It must be original, unpublished and not under review anywhere else, all co-authors must approve the submission, and you need permission for any copyrighted material you reproduce.
  2. Build the manuscript in this order:
    • Title in Tamil and English
    • Author names, affiliations, e-mail addresses and ORCID iDs
    • Abstract of 150–250 words, in Tamil and English
    • 4–6 keywords, in Tamil and English
    • Introduction, main text under numbered headings, and conclusion
    • References
  3. Format it correctly. Save as Microsoft Word (.docx) in a Unicode Tamil font such as Latha or Noto Sans Tamil, never a legacy font like Bamini. Number and caption every table and figure, and use one citation style throughout.
  4. Check similarity before you send. Overall similarity must stay within 15%, excluding references and properly quoted material.
  5. Submit online. Use the submission form. You receive an Article ID immediately.
  6. Track and revise. Follow progress on the tracking page with your Article ID and e-mail address, and answer reviewer comments point by point.
  7. After acceptance. Payment instructions arrive with the acceptance letter. Once published, your article carries a DOI and you can download your certificate.

The complete Author Guidelines are on the journal website.

Seven tips to get your Tamil research paper accepted

Reviewers weigh originality, sources and argument before polish, so put your effort there first.

  1. Ask a question, not a topic. “Folklore in Karisal” is a topic; “How does folklore carry social memory in Karisal?” is a research question a reviewer can test.
  2. Show what is already known. Cite earlier studies, in Tamil and in English, and say plainly what your paper adds.
  3. Cite primary texts exactly. Give the poem or verse number, the line and the edition you used for Sangam texts, Tirukkural or Tolkappiyam.
  4. Make the English abstract stand alone. Many readers and indexing services see only the English abstract, so state the question, method and finding in it.
  5. Choose findable keywords. Use the terms other researchers search for, and keep one spelling of transliterated names (Tolkappiyam or Tholkappiyam) throughout.
  6. Add an ORCID iD for every author. It links your DOI to your profile so the citation is credited to you.
  7. Answer reviewers point by point. List each comment, what you changed and where, in a short response table.
